Ideas for First Dates

So you've gotten your first date with a prospective professional single, or maybe you've already made it through the first date and are working on your second, third, or fourth. Whatever the case, you want to plan something that will both intrigue your date and keep you both as comfortable as possible. With dating, timing is everything, and there are different types of dates to accommodate varying intimacy levels. Knowing your goals of each date, can help to avoid running the risk of scaring your date off, or conversely, falling short of expectations. That's why we've included some ideas of fun and intimate date ideas below, based upon where you are in your dating timeline.

First Date Ideas

  • Local coffeehouse... is the perfect atmosphere to sit and enjoy a cup and get to know one another. Plus, the freedom to end the date when your cup's empty, or stay on for a refill.
  • Upscale Bar (no dives!)... meeting for a drink is always a good idea for the same reasons as a cup of joe, but instead of pumping you up with caffeine, having a drink or two will help take the edge off of those first date jitters.
  • Local art gallery... is great for a more potential intimate first date. You can amble through the exhibits, catching glimpses and intellectual conversations as you go.
  • Comedy Club... is a great ice-breaking environment, but you might want to select a clean language one. Not only will you be focusing center-stage (hilarious or not), but you'll be able to gather some insight on your date's sense of humor. Word to the wise, pay attention to your date and try to communicate in between breaks.
  • Bowling or Mini Golf... These are two great choices, because everyone can enjoy one or the other. It's romantic and traditional, yet not serious or expensive.
  • Planetarium... This is along the lines of a movie, and people are less likely to interrupt you while making light comment.

Beyond the First Date

  • Try for a common interest or hobby. Maybe you talked about some compatible interests you both love or have been meaning to try. If not and you are still stumped, any of the above will provide great second, third, and fourth dates, in which you can find a common interests.
  • Nice Dinner... This usually applies to a more in depth third or fourth date. You've shared some stimulating conversation, you have found some common interest, and now, you want to impress your date. You certainly don't need to go all out, but pick a place to show your increased effort and interest.
  • Romantic picnic or walk in the park... a romantic picnic in which you have thoughtfully arranged a modestly elegant feast. If you have done your homework and paid attention to your date, adding the romantic venues and themes at this point is ok. The intimacy of making it successfully through a few dates has earned this.
